A 47-year-old man from the Netherlands was reportedly bitten by a snouted cobra on his genitals while he was on holiday in South Africa.
The man was reportedly using the toilet when the snake hiding in it bit him on his genitals.
According to the medical journal Urology Case Reports, the man’s penis and scrotum were swollen, were “deep purple in colour” and he were painful when he was admitted to hospital after the bite.
“Scrotal necrosis was diagnosed, and he received multiple doses of a non-specific snake venom antiserum and broad-spectrum antibiotics.
“Although no neurological sequelae developed, he did require hemodialysis due to acute kidney injury,” the medical journal reported.
It was further reported that after the 47-year-old had stabilized, he was taken to the Netherlands for further medical treatment and he has since fully recovered.
The Dutch tourist was bitten by the snake while on holiday in a nature reserve in South Africa.
The medical journal reported that the 47-year-old had to wait for 3 hours before he was transported by a helicopter to the nearest hospital, which was about 350km away.
During the wait, the man reportedly “felt a burning sensation in his genitals and a pain that ascended through his groin to his flank, upper chest, and abdomen. He also reported vomiting but no neurological symptoms”.
