An aspiring Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) ward 20 in Msunduzi (Pietermaritzburg), KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), councillor, Michael Thulani Shangase was fatally shot on Sunday at approximately 5pm in the Herwood area of Plessilaer in the Midlands of the province, the police said.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said the Kwanyamazane resident was apparently returning from an EFF campaigning meeting in Dambula in Herwood when he was killed.
“The motive for the killing has not yet been established.
“We have mobilised the 72-hour Activation Plan which entails the mobilisation of specialized units such as Crime Intelligence, the KZN Political Task Team, Detectives and DPCI to ensure that evidence, intelligence and information, which can help track and arrest those responsible, is gathered.
“In the meantime, we are appealing to anyone with information to please contact the SAPS on the SAPS CrimeStop number 086 00 10111 or via the MySAPSApp. Informers may remain anonymous and all information will be treated with strictest confidence,” Naidoo said.
Shangase’s murder comes days after an African National Congress (ANC) ward councillor candidate in Cator Crest, KZN, was shot and killed.
Police in the province said the ANC councillor candidate, Siyabonga Mkhize, was shot on Friday.
On Monday, The Mercury reported that the police are questioning two people following Mkhize’s murder.
