Grade 4 learner, 10-year-old Nhlanzeko Mthembu was struck by lightning on Monday, 6 September 2021, in Ofafa near Ixopo in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and sadly lost his life.
According to reports, Nhlanzeko was part of a group that was on their way to school at Lufafa Primary School when he was struck by lightning.
In a separate incident, 45-year-old Mziwenkosi Phungula was killed during a lightning strike at his home in the Gobhogobho area in the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma local municipality.
KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Sipho Hlomuka has expressed his condolences to the families of the two people who passed away amid the inclement weather conditions that struck large parts of the province from Monday.
Meanwhile, disaster management teams responded to incidents in Durban, La Mercy where parts of a road collapsed and resulted in a section of a house being washed away.
In KwaDukuza, Ward 16, a house collapsed as a result of the heavy rains.
Hlomuka has called upon the municipalities to ensure that stormwater drainage systems are regularly maintained to limit the risk of water building up. The MEC has also urged residents to dispose of litter appropriately.
“From the assessment done by the department, the failure to dispose of litter properly by residents contributes to the blocking of stormwater drainage systems.”
