Three officials from the Department of Home Affairs in Ermelo, Mpumalanga, were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly asking for bribes from foreign nationals.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said two immigration officers and a Home Affairs assistant director were arrested.
“The trio allegedly demanded money from foreign nationals owning shops around Ermelo town as from January 2021, claiming that they are illegal in the country. The complainant then reported the matter to the local police station and an investigation was launched by the Anti-Corruption Unit.
“An operation was conducted where the three suspects were arrested yesterday, 09 November 2021, after receiving trap money and it was found in possession of the suspects. The three suspects will make their first appearance before the Magistrate’s Court in Ermelo today, 10 November 2021 on the charge of corruption,” Mohlala said.
