An Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) councillor candidate was reportedly arrested for beating his girlfriend, Isolezwe ngeSonto (Sunday edition) reports.
The publication reported that according to the spokesperson of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal, Captain Nqobile Gwala, the KwaMsane (ward 6), Mtubatuba in northern KwaZulu-Natal, IFP councillor candidate, 39-year-old Mfundo Msweli, appeared at the KwaMsane Magistrates’ Court on 11 October 2021 and is due back in court on 5 November 2021, four days after the local government elections.
It was further reported that IFP spokesperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa said the party is concerned about the allegations levelled against Msweli and that it expects the law take its course while the party conducts an internal investigation.
Isolezwe ngeSonto reported that attempts to reach Msweli for comment were unsuccessful as his phone rang unanswered and that by the time of publication he had not responded to a text message sent to him.
The publication reported that a 33-year-old woman from Groutville, KwaDukuza, who asked that she remain anonymous, opened the case against Msweli after he allegedly beat her on 8 October 2021.
The woman told the Sunday publication that Msweli allegedly recorded a video of him assaulting her, which he allegedly spread on social media.
The woman was also quoted as saying she was still recovering from her injuries allegedly inflicted by Msweli.
