Inanda police in KwaZulu-Natal recorded the most incidents of rape

The Inanda police station in KwaZulu-Natal recorded the most incidents of rape during the first quarter of 2021/2022.

This was revealed during Police Minister Bheki Cele’s presentation of the quarterly crime statistics on Friday. The statistics reflect crimes that occurred from 1 April 2021 to the end of June.

The KwaZulu-Natal police station, which is located in an area some have called the rape capital of South Africa, Inanda, was followed by the Delft police station in the Western Cape and then the Lusikisiki police station in the Eastern Cape.

According to the statistics presented by Cele, 10 006 people were raped in the period between April and June 2021.

“This is an increase of 4 201 cases, amounting to a 72.4% increase, compared to the skewed previous reporting period. This number drops drastically to 2.8% if comparison was made to the normal period prior to Lockdown,” Cele said.

Cele said of the 5439 sampled rape cases, 3766 rape incidents were perpetrated at either the victim’s or rapist’s home and that 487 cases of rape were related to domestic violence.

“The 47.1% increase is recorded for sexual offences when compared to the previous skewed reporting period, this figure is revised to 5.0% if compared to the previous normal period of 2019/2020 financial year,” the minister said.

Contact crimes or crimes committed against a person, namely, murder, attempted murder, sexual offences, assault GBH, common assault, aggravated, and common assault increased by 60.6% during the period under review.

The statistics presented by the police minister on Friday revealed a significant increase in the number of cases reported across a number of crime categories.

Meanwhile, 46 cash-in-transit (CIT) robberies were reported in the first quarter of the 2021/2020 financial year, an increase of 27 more incidents when compared to the same period last year.
