Inmate charged with murder of Leeuwkop prison warder due back in court on 26 August

The inmate who was charged with murder after a Leeuwkop prison warder was found dead appeared in court on Wednesday, the national prosecuting authority (NPA) said.

NPA Gauteng spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said the convicted offender, Nigel Marais, aged 30, appeared at the Alexandra Magistrates Court earlier today for the murder of a correctional officer at the Leeuwkop correctional facility.

“The case emanates from the discovery of Eunice Moloko’s lifeless body on 10 August inside the female toilets at her place of employment.

“Marais was sentenced for a count of murder and another of attempted murder in November 2015 for an incident that happened in KwaZulu-Natal in 2014. He is currently serving 18 years imprisonment at the Leeuwkop correctional facility.

“The case was remanded to 26 August for further investigations,” Mjonondwane said.
