Kidnapped Jozini baby re-united with his mother, suspect arrested

A 32-year-old suspect has been arrested following the kidnapping of a baby from Jozini, KwaZulu-Natal, on 10 August 2021.

Police in KwaZulu-Natal said the suspect is expected to appear in the Ubombo Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

“The baby has been re-united with the mother,” an official police spokesperson said.

Police said on Wednesday they had received a tip off that the suspect was at Ermelo in Mpumalanga with the kidnapped baby.

“The Jozini and Ermelo family violence, child protection and sexual offences units (FCS) were immediately contacted and the information was shared with them. The suspect was arrested while at a clinic in Ermelo to obtain a vaccination card for the baby. She was arrested by the Ermelo FCS unit and the kidnapped baby was also found,” police said.

At the time of the kidnapping the baby was about a day old when he was taken from his 35-year-old mother at the Mamlambo bus stop in Maphanya area, police said.

“It is alleged that on 10 August 2021 the mother had just been discharged from hospital after giving birth to a baby boy the day before, when she met with an unknown female who offered to carry the child for her. They boarded a bus from the hospital and when they got off at Mamlambo bus station, the woman disappeared with the baby whilst the mother was eating her meal. When she made inquiries in the vicinity, she was told that a silver grey motor vehicle picked up the woman with the baby and drove away,” police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala said.
