Man who accused his girlfriend of cheating arrested for attempted murder

Police in Johannesburg, Gauteng, on Wednesday at 9pm arrested a 38-year-old man for attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition at Cherry Court on corner Bree and Polly Street.

Police spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele said the man allegedly shot his 28-year-old girlfriend once in the upper body while they were inside their flat.

“They had an argument concerning the phone and he accused the victim to be cheating on him. He shot her and damaged her cellphone with a bullet,” Mbele said.

The 28-year-old woman was rushed to a hospital, Mbele added.

A firearm with no serial number and a live round were recovered by the police, Mbele said, adding that the firearm will be sent to ballistic testing “to ascertain if it was used in the commission of other serious and violent crimes”.

Mbele said police investigations into the alleged shooting are underway and that the suspect is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 3 September 2021.
