Relative of retired cop killed allegedly because insurance policies had matured among 4 arrested for the murder

A relative of a retired police officer who was allegedly killed because insurance policies had matured is among the four suspects police in KwaZulu-Natal arrested for the murder.

Police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala said on Friday at 2pm, police from Melmoth received a tip off about a vehicle at a service station in Eshowe which had blood stains on it.

Gwala said a team of detectives than proceeded to the location where the vehicle was found with two men.

“The men were interrogated regarding the blood that they were cleaning in the vehicle. It was established that the men were hired to kill Sibusiso Mbonambi, 62, a retired police officer. Mbonambi was stationed at Eshowe SAPS where he was a Warrant Officer when he retired.

“The police worked tirelessly throughout the night trying to locate the body which was reported to be dumped in the bushes at Makhasaneni area in Melmoth,” Gwala said, adding that Mbonambi’s body was eventually found on Saturday morning at 4am in the bushes.

Mbonambi’s body had gunshot wounds to the upper body, Gwala said.

“Further investigation led police to the arrest of two more suspects at Eshowe. One of the suspects is related to the deceased, while the other suspect is a former employee of a community radio station.

“During the course of the investigation it was revealed that the deceased was killed due to insurance policies that were matured. Four suspects aged between 28 and 38 are expected to appear before the Melmoth Magistrate’s Court tomorrow on charges of murder,” Gwala said.
