Former president FW de Klerk has reportedly died at the age of 85.
De Klerk is the last president of apartheid South Africa before the country transitioned to democratic governance.
News24 reports that De Klerk’s death was confirmed by the spokesperson of the former president’s foundation, Dave Steward.
Steward said de Klerk died on Thursday morning at his home following a struggle with cancer.
According to a statement issued by the FW De Klerk Foundation in June, the former president was diagnosed with mesothelioma – a cancer that affects the lining of the lungs – in March.
That statement sought to dismiss media reports that De Klerk’s health was at the time “rapidly deteriorating”.
