WATCH: Sho Madjozi gets the jab as #VaccineRollOutSA opens up for 18 to 35 age group

On the first day, 20 August 2021, of the vaccination of persons aged between 18 and 35, #VaccineRollOutSA was trending by the afternoon, with Twitter users sharing images and video clips of them getting the Covid-19 vaccine (the jab).

Following a virtual meeting on Wednesday, Cabinet approved the vaccination of the age group between 18 and 35, which was scheduled to be eligible to register for the jab on 1 September 2021.

The Department of Health had announced that walk-ins at vaccination sites across the country of people who are either registered for the jab on the EVDS or not are welcomed.

A person wanting to get the jab is required to bring a form of identification, an ID or driver’s licence.

The department had also announced that going forward it will implement the strategy of going to the people by setting up pop up vaccination sites, rather than waiting for people to come to vaccination sites to get the jab. In Gauteng, vaccines were also administered at a pop up vaccination site at the Bara Taxi Rank in Soweto.

Popular musician Sho Madjozi was among the people who got the jab on Friday.

Meanwhile, Health Minister, Dr Joe Phaahla has expressed concern over the rising number of new Covid-19 infections.

“The reality is that this battle is not yet over. The third wave remains stubbornly in our midst,” Phaahla said.

The minister said the number of new cases in the Western Cape has been increasing, with the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Northern Cape lagging behind.

β€œThe worrying trend is that overall in the last seven days, there has been an 18.2% increase in new infections over that seven-day period compared to the previous seven days.

β€œSo, while the curve has started to show a downward trend, it is now picking up again, driven largely by the Western Cape, KZN, and the Eastern Cape. But also the Northern Cape as I’ve said which has never really gone down from the second wave and just went straight into the third wave,” Phaahla said.
